Bringing the Story of Erimitis to Corfu’s Classrooms

€5,000 awarded

Erimitis, in the north of Corfu, is one of the island’s most treasured natural landscapes—home to wetlands, lagoons, and remarkable biodiversity. The Ionian Environment Foundation (IEF), together with our long-standing partner Blue Marine Foundation, is supporting iSea in their work to establish a Local Managed Marine Area (LMMA), as part of the wider effort to protect this unique area.

Within this larger initiative, we are funding iSea’s education-focused programme, which brings the story and ecological importance of Erimitis into classrooms across Corfu. By engaging young people, we aim to nurture understanding, inspire stewardship, and ensure that the next generation is ready to care for this extraordinary landscape.

iSea has created bilingual (Greek and English) educational materials designed to spark curiosity and connection. These include interactive activities and games suitable for both classroom and outdoor learning, along with an engaging presentation that introduces students to Erimitis’ unique habitats and the pressures they face. These resources will be shared with schools throughout Corfu, with a special focus on those in the northern communities closest to Erimitis.

The aim is simple yet vital: to inspire environmental awareness, build understanding, and encourage future stewardship of this valuable natural area.
