Meet our new Steering Committee Member!

We are delighted to welcome Sophia Michalopoulou to the IEF Steering Committee

Born and raised on the island of Corfu, Sophia’s life has always been deeply connected to water—from sailing and diving with her father, to guiding rainforest night walks in Australia, studying alongside Indigenous elders, and founding Greece’s first open-water mermaid school

As an Aquatic Therapist, Educator, and passionate advocate for babies, mothers, and the natural world, Sophia brings a truly unique blend of wisdom, creativity, and environmental care. Through her work with MERMAIDS CORFU and AQUAGENESIS, she has been making waves in aquatic education and birth support, always grounding her work in community and connection

We’re so excited for the insight and inspiration she’ll bring to the Ionian Environment Foundation

I feel tremendously grateful and humbled by the prospect of assisting the Ionian Environment Foundation in facilitating change which might positively impact future generations and their wellbeing in the natural environment. The principles of water that have the most impact in my field of expertise are listening, presence, and connection, and if any one of these could be of use to create long-lasting ripples of change, I would feel I have meaningfully served my time and purpose.
