Summer Updates from the Ionian Environment Foundation (IEF)!

With summer well and truly in full swing throughout the Ionian and as tourists join locals in enjoying the natural beauty of our beloved region, it is important to remember that everyone plays their part in preserving the unique character and biodiversity of the Ionian Islands for future generations.

 

Newsletter Highlights

Sustainability in Tourism

Our Villa Alliance channels funds from Northern Corfu’s destinations to grassroots environmental projects, promoting sustainable behavior across the tourism industry. Hotel Angsana in Corfu is serving dishes using invasive blue crab, with profits supporting the IEF.

 

Albania Overboard Event

Join us for the annual Albania Overboard charity swim on September 14th, raising funds for conservation projects. We’re also exploring an ecological corridor between Butrint National Park in Albania and the Erimitis Peninsula in Corfu.

 

Sustainable Sailing

The first Sustainable Sailing Greece meeting took place in April, focusing on preserving the Ionian Sea. In June, we partnered with Vliho Yacht Company to promote sustainable sailing practices and funded a project to evaluate anchorage pressures on Posidonia meadows using drones.

 

Fishery Protected Areas Triumph

Our sister foundation, Cyclades Preservation Fund, celebrated a milestone with the establishment of Fisheries Restricted Areas in Greece, supporting sustainable fishing practices.
