Dolphins inhabiting the coastal waters of Greece are facing significant threats from increasing human encroachment, while others have disappeared altogether from portions of their former range. The Ionian Sea’s dolphin have been extensively impacted by a number of factors including unregulated trawler fishing and increased pressures from tourist boats and marine ttaffic.

The Ionian Dolphin Project also seeks to educate and build awareness in the growing sailing holidays sector. This is done both in terms of providing clear guidelines to sailors to minimise disturbance on marine life, and also by providing the tools to allow sailors to contribute meaningfully to the data collection! See their link for all the resources here.

By supporting the Ionian Dolphin Project IDP we hope to ensure the long-term viability of marine mammals living in coastal waters of the eastern Ionian Sea. Research by Tethys Research Institute is providing support conservation efforts, through various actions including the regular submission of reports to the Ministry of Environment that can help gain the status of ‘endangered species’ which would enforce stricter conservation regulations. It is a much needed research, in order to be able to protect these iconic animals.
